In the vast area of the Didi (Great) Lilo, the construction of a gas compression system on the premises of the public utility polygons is planned, with an estimated cost of €20 million. Today, the agreement for project support and implementation was signed by the Mayor of Tbilisi, Mr. Andria Basilaia, the Director of "Tbilservice Group" Ltd, Mr. David Pachulia, and Mr. Alkis Drakinos, the Caucasus Regional Director of the EBRD. To facilitate the project's execution, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will provide a loan of 16 million euros, while the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership Fund (E5P) will provide a grant of €4 million.
"The reform of the waste management system, which encompasses many components, has commenced in the capital city. Today, a very significant agreement has been signed, which anticipates the creation of a gas compression system on the premises of the Didi Lilo's polygons. It's very important that our main supporter in this process is the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, to whom we extend our sincere gratitude. The Bank actively assists us both in drafting the strategy and its implementation. The preparatory work for this project will begin soon," announced Andria Basilaia.
"Today is a significant day for us. We signed an agreement on the gas compression project's support and implementation. The project aims to address environmental issues in the vicinity of the Didi Lilo, close polygons, closure of landfills, and utilizing the received gas for electricity generation. As you may recall, this project is being implemented by Tbilservice Group," announced Alkis Drakinos.
The project includes the final closure of landfill sites, the recovery of already open or closed landfills' emitted gas, and its subsequent utilization. Establishing infrastructure on the Didi Lilo's polygon, preventing the spread of methane into the air, converting it into electricity, and using it will be crucial aspects. With the ongoing work on the Didi Lilo, the environmental condition will significantly improve, and many local population problems will be addressed.
Furthermore, international consultants will be selected to work with the bank and "Tbilservice Group" to develop tender documentation. Following that, a project and construction tender will be announced. The infrastructure work is scheduled to start in the coming year.
